My blog is where I share detailed wedding and engagement stories on my journey as a wedding photographer. You'll also find blogs about great venues and planners to connect with and tips on how you can make your wedding day the BEST day possible.
Congratulations! You are officially engaged and have started the journey towards planning your wedding. But before you get ahead of yourself, you need to plan an engagement session to announce to the world and celebrate what’s to come!
What I’ve noticed is that most couples are a little unsure about the particulars. They know what they want but sometimes don’t know where to start or what to expect. Use these quick tips to make your engagement session is fun and worry free. Let’s dive in shall we?
You know what they say….location, location, location. But instead of worrying whether a location you like is ideal, simply focus on the feel of the session. Let your photographer know what vibe you want and capitalize on their expertise in choosing locations that make sense. Most couples go for a beach scene, a downtownurban engagement session or a sun and trees engagement session and when I discuss locations with clients, I typically have 3 or 4 locations already in mind. So don’t stress! Tell your photographer what you want and let them take care of the rest for you.
The second tip is simple. HAVE FUN!! One of the very first things I tell couples not to focus on me. Why? Because focusing on each other and having fun evokes natural emotions. When you forget about the camera that connection you two share will undoubtedly manifest itself in great images. All of that shyness melts away when you don’t have to focus on the camera and can simply enjoy being with the one you love. Remember that the reason for your engagement session is to celebrate your engagement and the best way to do that is to actually celebrate! lol. Laugh, dance, hug, flirt. Enjoy your time with each other and the rest will take care of itself.
Tip number three for having a rock star engagement session is choosing your wardrobe. There is no one-size-fits-all formula for what to wear. What I always tell couples is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Whether it’s a sun dress and sandals or an evening gown and heels, your engagement session is all about YOU. Be authentic! The right outfit just makes you feel better and the better your feel, the more relaxed you’ll be in front of the camera.
The last tip for having an amazing engagement session is paramount. You absolutely must trust your photographer. The reason you hired your photographer is because of their unique style and personality. That’s huge! So instead of worrying about certain poses or feeling like you need to micromanage, simply trusting that your photographer knows exactly what he or she is doing will not only put you at ease but will allow them to perform at the highest level. Photographers are artists and you are the canvas. Let them paint! You’ll be glad you did.
Great images don’t just happen, they’re created. When it comes to your engagement session, part of that creation process is understanding that the connection you’ve made with your fiancé is what matters most. If you focus on that, trust your photographer and have faith in the process, you’ll have the best engagement session ever!
Congratulations on your engagement and I wish you the best of luck in your future marriage. You’re the real MVP!
